  1. Hi Jack,
    My Question:
Why does the Catholic Church treat women with such contempt? When I worked for the Kalamazoo Diocese I felt that the seminarians treated me as if I was the devil, him/her-self. Not looking me in the eye when meeting me, in conversations, etc. Jesus didn’t treat women like that. What is behind it? I am so tired of being treated without concern or compassion, or equality, as a human being in this world, by my Church.

    Thanks,
    Pat Squires

  2. Hey, Jack,

How about a column on dissent in the Catholic church? What I would really like is your thoughts on an independent Roman Catholic church or independent Catholicism generally.
Thousands leave the Roman church every year and turn to other mainline Christian denominations. Why not give them the option of turning to an independent Roman Catholic community where all of the reforms which reformers seek already exist? Is this not an expression of faithful dissenters? I wonder how many closeted Roman Catholic dissenters are sitting in their parish pew every weekend?

  3. Dear Jack,
At the risk of being simplistic or redundant, I wonder if you would address the issue of literal versus interpretive translation of ancient texts. I read “Lost in Translation,” a book by Australian Jesuit theologian Gerald O’Collins which explores the 2010 translation of the Mass and the way the work of many English speaking scholars was rejected by the conservatives in the Vatican. In light of the diminishing numbers of Catholics and the return to pre-Vatican Latin mass, etc. I wonder if literalists are adding to the lack of connection with the essence of our faith for many Catholics, especially the young. This may not be a major topic but, as a former English teacher and reader in our parish, I often marvel at the terribly convoluted and unintelligible translations that are passed off at mass that, for many, are their only weekly experience with sacred scripture. I would dearly love to get your take on this issue.
    Peace,
    Frank
