The Associated Press reports that the Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of New York and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Timothy Dolan, will give the benediction at the Republican National Convention on the night Mitt Romney accepts the presidential nomination.
Joseph Zwilling, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of New York, said Cardinal Dolan’s agreement to participate in the Republican National Convention should not be seen as partisan nor an endorsement of Mr. Romney.

Bullshit! Sorry, but that’s the only response I can think of.
Cardinal Dolan publicly stated he and Ryan disagree on some fundamental principals, but can be civil in their disagreements. I guess if Dolan prayed at the Democratic convention which openly supports the destruction of the unborn that that is OK and their are “other issues” which are important. Give me a break!
Disturbing, to say the least. It is so blatant. I echo pjnugent’s sentiments.
And who is the USCCB allowing to bless the Democrats’ convention, if they are NON-PARTISAN — after their “Fortnight for Freedom”, huh???
Yes it is becoming very clear. In our United States a person can be Republican or Democrat BUT our hierarchy must remain politically neutral. Political neutrality of people like Cardinal Dolan and a host of other USCCB members is a not so holy joke. John
So now we are being told by the Archdiocese how we are to see reality when the Cardinal is in bed with the Republican Party candidates: that this is no endorsement or partisan stand. So “power corrupts absolutely.” Isn’t this the way that the NAZI’s smoozed the Catholic hierarchy in Germany before WWII? So we are supposed to pretend that this is just fine and business as usual? Where is the protest? Where the outrage?
Fr. Bob Cushing
Where indeed is the protest and where the outrage? At least NCR has taken a strong editorial position.
I completely agree with Fr. Cushing- I can’t even see how a Catholic priest would endorse Romney and Ryan when they are determined to put the poor folks of the country out on the street and it’s just as outrageous as WWII Nazis- they did the same kind of evil to perfectly innocent citizens! They sure are smooth- ready to take on more private interests! Doesn’t the Cardinal understand how this will flood more people into the gates of Catholic charities? Maybe that’s what he wants?
